About the images..
My father served as an enlisted man in the United States Army from 1943 through VE Day 1945. He served in a Combat Engineer Battalion. He was not there as a photographer, so these images were taken when he had the opportunity. I discovered these images after he had passed away when my youngest sister mentioned she had several of his pictures from World War 2 stored in her closet.
These images are scanned from the original prints. Unfortunately they were not date stamped, and I could only guess at the locations through the handwritten notes in the margins. I have no idea what type of camera he used; whatever he used had to fit in a rucksack, so I don’t even know if he had detachable lenses. I do know that Dad had a good eye, and his sense of composition and lighting was amazing given the circumstances. Many, (if not most) of these images are iconic.
